The Story Behind Hormiga Landscapes

Every company has a beginning. Ours began with hard work, sacrifice, and a dream.

In 2008, during one of the most difficult economic recessions in the United States, finding a job was nearly impossible. Like many others, I was simply looking for an opportunity to support my family and build a better future.

That opportunity came through landscaping.

I started at the bottom, earning $6.90 per hour. It wasn’t glamorous, but I was grateful to have a chance. From my very first day, I discovered something unexpected—I genuinely loved transforming outdoor spaces and creating landscapes that people could enjoy for years to come.

The work was never easy.

During the winter months, our crews worked through snowstorms, often staying awake for more than 24 hours at a time. We worked on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. While others celebrated with their families, we were outside making roads, parking lots, and businesses safe for our communities.

Those years taught me the value of commitment, responsibility, and perseverance.

As my experience grew, so did my responsibilities. I learned every aspect of the business—from installing irrigation systems and building patios to managing crews, solving customer concerns, coordinating operations, and ensuring projects were completed with excellence.

The journey wasn’t always easy. Along the way, I faced difficult work environments, unfair treatment, and challenges that tested my character. Those experiences shaped my leadership philosophy and reinforced the kind of company I wanted to build—one founded on respect, honesty, integrity, and opportunity.

Eventually, I realized it was time to build something different.

Together with five close friends—men who had worked side by side for years—we decided to take a leap of faith. We weren’t just coworkers. We were brothers who shared the same work ethic, the same passion for quality, and the same vision of creating a company where both employees and customers would always come first.

That is how Hormiga Landscapes was born.

Why “Hormiga”?

“Hormiga” means Ant in Spanish.

The ant perfectly represents who we are.

Although small, ants accomplish extraordinary things. They work together, never stop moving forward, overcome obstacles, and carry many times their own weight.

Throughout our journey, many people doubted us. Some believed the language barrier would hold us back. Others believed we couldn’t compete with larger, more established companies.

They underestimated the power of determination.

Like the ant, we keep moving forward.
